Ysgol Pennant's ‘Interactive Matinee’ with National Dance Company Wales

Ysgol Pennant School took pupils to Theatr Hafren for an interactive matinee by National Dance Company Wales.

Following their successful Go and See application, Ysgol Pennant School in Powys, took 20 (year 4, 5 & 6) pupils to Theatre Hafren to experience an interactive matinee by National Dance Company Wales, with a performance of 'Folk' and followed by a Q&A session.

Learning about jobs and roles in theatres

This is a small Welsh medium school that has 70 pupils on the roll in rural Powys. The school is situated in a farming community 19 miles away from the nearest town.

The visit to Theatr Hafren gave the learners real insight into the jobs and roles that exist at a theatre.

Working with dancers who make a living from their art gave learners further insight into employment in the arts - as performers.

Telling a story through performance

Participation in contemporary dance activities was a superb added dimension that encouraged the learners to express ideas through their bodies, to collaborate in pairs and in groups and to discuss how performance can tell a story.

There are numerous links with the curriculum especially language development, physical education, self-expression.

For these pupils, the main experience of ‘the arts’ is through performing arts at school; so this experience of contemporary dance was completely new to them.

A note of appreciation was penned by one pupil:
