The Last 5 Years - A BSL choreography investigation by Leeway Productions

A Research and Development Grant to investigate the development of a production accessible to BSL audiences.

Leeway Productions applied for a Research and Development grant to focus on conceiving, contextualising and developing best practice between director, deaf and hearing performers and a deaf choreographer who speaks BSL. The aim was to make the production BSL-ready.

What was explored during this project?

  1. How to create / integrate a BSL led choreographic element into the production, making the production accessible to BSL audiences for every show. It was important to conceive a new way of working with text, music and movement.
  2. How to make the project financially viable with the integration of the BSL.
  3. Investigation alongside venues - what support was needed and what could venues provide to make this production accessible?

Achievements and impacts

One of the biggest impacts of the project was on the creatives involved, especially the deaf artists Mark and Kevin. They are no longer segregated in their creative practice.

Continuing the conversations

The legacy of the project will include the work done with deaf clubs and organisations. The project reached out to deaf clubs and organisations around South Wales and although they were positive about the project they were unable to attend the R&D showing.

The investigation has opened the door and intends to continue the conversations with those organisations. Angharad and Sami will visit the deaf clubs and communities with the film to get feedback on it and the project which in turn will feed the production.

Angharad has also been approached by Ballet Cymru as they are integrating BSL into their next project, therefore she is delighted to be able to share some discoveries already with other organisations.
