La Biennale curator 2011
The Venice Biennale (La Biennale di Venezia) has for over a century been one of the most prestigious cultural institutions in the world. Ever since its foundation, it has been at the forefront in the research and promotion of new artistic trends. In Venice, it organises international events in the field of the contemporary arts that are amongst the most important of their kind in the world.
The title chosen for the 54th International Art Exhibition is ILLUMInazioni – ILLUMInations.
The title literally draws attention to the importance of current developments in international art in a globalised world.
The board of the 54th Venice Biennale, chaired by Paolo Baratta appointed Bice Curiger as the curator of the 2011 Venice Biennale.
Bice Curiger is an art historian, critic and curator educated at the University of Zurich. Since 1993 she has been curator of the Zurich Kunsthaus. She is also co-founder and editor-in-chief of Parkett, which has been published in Zurich and New York since 1984. In addition to her activity at Parkett and the Zurich Kunsthaus, she has served as the publishing director of Tate etc magazine produced by Tate Gallery London.
