Mzansi Cymru Project: Torchbearers

Mzansi Cymru is an ambitious international project, initiated by community development charity Valleys Kids, seeking to develop long-term links with Townships in Cape Town.

Patron: Lady Ellen Baker

We are creating a spectacular, large-scale community theatre production, involving hundreds of ordinary people in an extraordinary experience, celebrating the talents and sharing the cultures of young and older participants from both Wales & South Africa. The production will be peppered with key professionals such as internationally renowned South African trumpeter, Claude Deppa.

The Welsh creative team includes renowned musician & composer, Paula Gardiner as Musical Director / Composer and Sarah Cole of SC Productions (The Passion in Port Talbot).

Playwright, Laurence Allan’s idea is inspired by the historical coincidence of the incarceration of Nelson Mandela and the filming of Zulu in South Africa in 1964.

His story focuses on two young people, a young Welsh actor and a Zulu girl who meet on the film set, fall in love, then are split apart by the brutality of the apartheid regime, until the unravelling of their story at the London 2012 Olympics.

Msanzi Cymru | Trashion ShowThe project provides a perfect melting pot for exploring universal themes of love and loss, repression and redemption and the triumph of the human spirit against all odds. We follow the fate of our two protagonists in their separate stories, experience their rich and diverse cultures through drama, song, dance, music and circus.

Hundreds of participants in the Valleys have already been caught up in workshops and roadshows on the journey towards the final performance.

A stellar line up of creative partners working in Townships will join with them including: Dance For All, Zip Zap Circus, Fezeka Choir, Cape Youth Philharmonic and Amampondo. Photography and Art projects are running in tandem with the performance facets of the project unearthing and nurturing new and untapped talents in the community.

The prestigious Donald Gordon Stage will see this epic spectacle come to fruition in a co-production with the Wales Millennium Centre.
