Illuminata

Caerphilly Castle, September 26-October 8 2010.

Illuminata: Caerphilly CastleThree hundred children all aged 8-18 retold the early turbulent years of Welsh history alongside an extraordinary son e lumiere in the magnificent setting of Caerphilly Castle.

The children from two secondary schools and five primary schools in the south Wales Valleys have devised and recreated battles, sieges and rebellions using the entire castle as their stage. Working with directors, percussionists and circus practitioners they have created a powerful piece of physical theatre.

The project, which has been awarded an Inspire Mark, is part of Cauldrons and Furnaces -a project that aims to tell extraordinary stories in 8 iconic heritage sites in Wales.

Illuminata is funded by Legacy Trust UK, Cadw and Arts Council of Wales and this event was a partnership with Caerphilly Borough Council.

Here is a filming of the event. It may also be viewed on Vimeo here.

Lewis Reed, 17, St Martins Secondary School and a participant, said:

"When I was told that there was going to be audition in the school for the Illuminata event that was going to be held in Caerphilly Castle, I knew it was something I had to be involved in.

"On the day of the auditions when Clare told everybody about the event, what we were going to be part of and what we would be recreating, I felt overwhelmed; I had this fantastic opportunity to create a part of my local history in the castle. To be given the parts of flag bearer and Roger Mortimer was brilliant. This really was a once in a lifetime opportunity. I am extremely thankful for Clare and all the people behind the Cauldrons and Furnaces project for giving me and my school this wonderful chance to be part of Caerphilly history."

Another participant, Leona Vaughan, 15, of the same school added:

"I think that this taught me as an individual to open my mind to try new things. It's such a brilliant thing and I'm extremely happy to have been a part of it. It is something that we can look back on and feel proud. Apart from having a lot of fun and being physically involved with the Illuminata spectacular, it was great to see the fantastic projections afterwards - what talent! Really, wow!

"Thank you so much once again - and I hope that we can all take part in another project soon!"
