Sandra Harnisch-Lacey, originally from Germany, trained at the Desmond Jones School of Mime and Physical Theatre and graduated from the Laban Centre for Movement and Dance in London. She was the recipient of the Sylvia Bodmer Award of the Laban Centre in 1997.
Sandra served as Artistic Director for Dance at The Gate Arts Centre, Cardiff (2004-2007) and has been a visiting lecturer on the dance degree course at Cardiff Metropolitan University and on both undergraduate and postgraduate courses at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama.
Her Cardiff-based company, Harnisch-Lacey Dance Theatre (HLDT), combines and integrates cross-genre theatre and dance styles, and her work has toured extensively across Wales, Europe and Canada. The company also has a popular and wide-ranging education and outreach programme.
As a choreographer, Sandra has worked for a number of years with the fusion of Contemporary Dance, Breakdance, Parcour and Capoeira. During this project, Sandra will delve deeper into these different dance styles by working with specialists in the individual styles in tailored one-to-one sessions. She will also be shadowing choreographers within the UK who are experts in their field.
While researching into 'Fusion' within other artforms, she will be engaging with theatre directors, composers and fine artists to enhance her understanding of the crossover between styles. An important part of the project will be studio-based experiments with two professional dancers (Contemporary and BBoy), which will aim to extract the key elements of the individual expressions.
The project as a whole will be documented in detail through filmed video clips and interviews, which will be broadcast on the web. By the end of the project, Sandra will have harnessed the gained knowledge into a specific movement vocabulary to strengthen and deepen the already recognizable style of her dance company Harnisch-Lacey Dance Theatre.
