Lynne is a composer, flautist and composition tutor at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. Her music ranges from intimate songs and instrumental pieces to large-scale vocal and theatrical works. She has composed two operas for Music Theatre Wales - the first of these, Gwyneth and the Green Knight, won the prestigious British Composer Award in 2003.
Lynne’s most recent commissions are The Face in the Mirror, an opera for children’s chorus commissioned by Welsh National Opera to be performed in 2012 and a new interactive opera for young audiences commissioned by Glyndebourne for a touring production in 2013-14.
With the aim of extending and developing her composition technique and musical thinking, Lynne’s Creative Wales project will centre on a series of experimental sketches for symphony orchestra.
Her most recent works, mainly operas, have been driven by narrative and vocal considerations, so for this project she is setting herself new imaginative and technical challenges. Lynne will focus on the specific areas of harmony, texture, large-scale orchestration and non-narrative structures. One starting point will be to use visual references and natural kinetic structures such as trees, skeletons, constellations and cloud formations to imagine and construct musical ideas.
She will closely examine the work of leading experimental composers and will consult composer ‘mentors’, for feedback on her work in progress and to exchange ideas. Finally, her completed sketches will be rehearsed and recorded in a workshop with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales.
Her intention is that the ideas and techniques developed during this project will determine new directions for her future work.
