Biography

Sean Edwards

Sean Edwards graduated with an MA in Sculpture from the Slade School of Art in 2005 and returned to Wales where he is now based in Abergavenny. He joined the artist-run space g39 in May 2008 to oversee WARP, the Welsh Artist Resource Programme.

Sean has exhibited widely nationally and internationally and has recently had solo exhibitions at both Limoncello, London and Tanya Leighton, Berlin (who both represent him). In 2008 Sean had a solo exhibition at the ICA, London as part of their Nought to Sixty programme and has been in numerous group shows including Lisson Gallery, London and Tanya Bonakdar, New York. Forthcoming projects include a major solo exhibition at Spike Island, Bristol in 2011.

The Project

Sean Edwards: Practice Table (ICA Version)Sean Edwards’ work investigates the sculptural potential of the everyday, often using remnants of previous activities as a starting point. In many of the works there is a sense of objects being in-progress, indeterminate and open to change. They function like propositions; the audience is invited to play a part in its creation. The completion is only ever realised in the exhibition environment which undermines the perception of the gallery as a space for fully achieved artworks closed to further development.

Having predominantly worked with sculpture it is Sean’s hope that the Award will allow him the time to capitalise on recent developments within the work concerning regret and disappointment. The award will allow Sean to take time from his work at WARP for a year of solid, undistracted art making in the studio. Using the time to return to research discovered through his exhibition at the ICA, London, Sean would like to investigate and explore the creative domain of the artist and determine how much the creation belongs to the artist and the role that the viewer has to play in embedding the work of art in the outside world.
