Biography

James Slater

James Slater was educated at the Purcell School, Royal College of Music and King’s College, Cambridge, before continuing his conducting studies with Neil Thomson. James’s recent professional development has been generously supported by the Arts Council of Wales and the Headley Trust.

He is Co-Artistic Director (with Leader Marcia Crayford) and Conductor of the newly-formed Mid Wales Chamber Orchestra. He is also Principal Conductor of the Hereford String Orchestra and was Artistic Director of the Brecknock Sinfonia and Marches Chamber Choir until 2009. James lives in Brecon with his wife and two young children.


The Project

James Slater conducting Mid Wales Chamber OrchestraThe Creative Wales Award will enable James to take up a Conducting Assistantship under Barry Wordsworth, Music Director at the Royal Ballet Covent Garden. The seven-month programme offers a unique opportunity to get first-hand experience of ballet conducting at the highest level and to work alongside internationally renowned conductors, choreographers and dancers at one of the world’s most prestigious venues.

The Assistantship will be structured to provide exposure to the full range of Royal Ballet productions including traditional works, modern ballets and contemporary dance, and will culminate in working as a Cover Conductor for performances of Wayne McGregor’s widely acclaimed Chroma in October 2011.
