An exhibition of glass, metal-work, product design, jewellery, ceramics and screen-printed textiles produced by Raising the Bar students will open in Studio 3 at Ruthin Craft Centre with a preview on Friday 16 September at 6.30pm.
Raising the Bar is a pilot programme established by Ruthin Craft Centre for gifted and talented AS level Art & Design and Design & Technology students within Denbighshire. The scheme offers a programme of additional opportunities for those showing artistic merit to enable access to high level artistic practice; promoting engagement with contemporary practitioners and access to specialist techniques in applied art and design additional to those available in schools.
This year the programme was funded by the Arts Council of Wales and Denbighshire County Council and included six masterclass workshops in Ceramics, Glass, Product Design, Screen- Print on Textiles, Metal-work and Jewellery delivered in partnership with Manchester School of Art, Manchester Metropolitan University. Workshops took place either at Ruthin Craft Centre or at the Manchester School of Art using their specialist facilities. The project enabled students to engage with contemporary practitioners who led workshops and provided mentoring. The project concluded with a careers study day which aimed to raise awareness of opportunities in the sector with speakers from further and higher education and inspirational practitioners such as Neil Hubbard from Heatherwick Studios, London and Creative Wales Ambassador, Laura Thomas.
Raising the Bar will be expanded in 2011/12, inviting applications from AS level Art & Design and Design & Technology students from all Denbighshire secondary schools.
Exhibition Preview : Friday 16 September 6.30pm, Studio 3, Ruthin Craft Centre, Ruthin, Denbighshire.
The exhibition will continue throughout the Autumn.
