Welsh Performers take Edinburgh by storm

Wales Arts International in partnership with British Council is presenting talent from Wales in the British Council Showcase programme. Every two years The British Council (the agency building cultural links between Britain and the rest of the world) holds a showcase of the best of British work as part of the Edinburgh Festival.

National Theatre Wales (and Told by an Idiot) will present The Dark Philosophers with an outstanding Welsh cast. Llwyth (Tribe) will be presented by Sherman Cymru and Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru. The Showcase will take place from 22 – 27 August 2011, as part of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

John McGrath, Artistic Director of National Theatre Wales, said: "It's been great for National Theatre Wales to make its debut at the Edinburgh fringe in such a strong year for Welsh work. After a very well received opening at the Traverse Theatre, we are now looking forward to taking part in the British Council Showcase, where a great range of international promoters will be joining our audiences. The Edinburgh Festival is like nothing else in the world - an unique meeting point for some of the most exciting theatre companies and artists working today. It's the perfect place for National Theatre Wales to start showing its work internationally."

Sherman Cymru and Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru stated, "Llwyth has allowed a contemporary, insightful and gloriously uplifting vision of Wales to be portrayed to both Welsh and UK audiences. The partnership between Sherman Cymru and Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru brings the production to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and means that vision will be seen by many more, and the inclusion of Llwyth in the British Council Showcase adds a really welcome international dimension. The Showcase is a fantastic opportunity for both companies to be profiled on a world stage and as part of a strong and varied UK programme."

The Festival Fringe invites some of the most interesting and challenging theatre, music and dance from across the world to Edinburgh. The Edinburgh Showcase 2011 gives drama and dance companies the opportunity to present their work to international delegates and subsequently tour overseas. This builds new relationships and opens up new markets for the UK’s performing arts sector.

Wales will also have its own networking event held on Wednesday 24 August 2011. The event aims to draw on and establish interest from and develop discussions with programmers from other countries and cultures and support the development of the producing sector in Wales to enable it to be in a stronger position to engage in international working in the future.

Eluned Haf, Director, Wales Arts International said:

"It’s very important for Wales to be represented at this significant international showcase to celebrate Welsh theatre’s vibrant scene, particularly at this exciting time. This is the first time a Welsh language production has been selected for the showcase. The surtitles used make it easily accessible and tourable. Both productions are bound to make an impact on delegates and will hopefully tour internationally as a result."
