‘Hedd’ – Peace and Poppies … a remembrance project with Flintshire schools and Theatr Clwyd

Ysgol Sychdyn and Ysgol Gymraeg Mornant have been working together on the ‘Hedd’ project. Over a six-week period, 3 artists visited the schools to help them delve into the history of local war memorials and uncover the stories of those named on them. Through film, drama, music and art, they explored themes such as peace and the impact war had on Welsh communities. Particular attention was given to the impact of the War on the Welsh language in the area and on local women. The project was inspired by the stories gathered by visiting War Memorials and Flintshire Records Office.

The children had a particularly special experience when they met Theatr Clwyd’s ‘Arts from the Armchair’ group. This is a weekly workshop for people with early memory loss and their carers.

Gwennan Mair Jones, Director of Creative Engagement at Theatr Clwyd explained more:

"This is a lovely project that has brought two schools together to learn, interact and share their thoughts and feelings about World War One. The children’s meeting with the Arts from the Armchair group was particularly good. The had an opportunity to explain what they had been doing and what they had learnt, as well as hearing about the group members’ memories of conflict."

"This project will have a lasting legacy for the young people; they will now view war memorials differently and understand the significance of Remembrance Sunday and the impact the First World War had on their local communities."

Visitors to Theatr Clwyd can discover the stories of some of those from the local area who died during World War One in a special exhibition by the schools between the 9th and 26th of November 2018.
