STAMP Castell03: To The Sea

The exhibition STAMP Castell returns to the town of Caernarfon this summer for the third time, led by Manon Awst. For the first time, visual artists will collaborate with poets, musicians, scientists and historians to reflect on the theme 'To The Sea', which coincides with Visit Wales' Year of The Sea 2018. After a busy period of research and creative conversations, unique artworks have been developed and will be on show in the Castle and in diverse locations across the town between 15 - 24 June 2018.

The idea behind the project is to break down the boundaries between different disciplines and encourage creative dialogue between experts, to offer diverse perspectives on the subject 'To The Sea'. The final artworks will be an exciting mixture of site-specific sculptures and installations, performances, digital works and soundpieces.

The Bristol-based artist Rich White has collaborated with the poet Rhys Iorwerth to create an original architectural structure in the Castle courtyard, in response to the platform of the Investiture. Artists Megan Broadmeadow and Nicky Deeley have collaborated with oceanographer Jess Mead Silvester from Bangor University's School of Ocean Sciences to create a multi-media installation in the Castle's Eagle Tower, where scientific data is interwoven with abstract images conceived by the artists. And then artist Katie Surridge from London has been fishing for scrap metal to create her sculptures, assisted by the Harbour Master and his boat the Seiont IV. These are only examples of the exciting collaborations that are happening as part of the project. There will be thirteen artworks altogether, with some placed in the Castle and others at Galeri, Balaclafa, the Yacht Club, and along the promenade.

There will also be connected events during the week, including an evening of poetry and music at the Royal Welsh Yacht Club on Sunday 17th June from 6pm, and an evening discussing the maritime history of the town at Balaclafa on Tuesday 19th June with Gareth Cowell (MOROL) and Bedwyr Rees. All these events are free and there is a warm welcome to everyone!

There will be free admission to the Castle on the evening of the launch, 15th June at 6pm, and it is possible to join an art tour to see the work on both Saturdays 16th and 23rd June.
